This report is based on incidents of ongoing hostile and often violence occurring at many Milwaukee Public Schools. Some incidents in this report have been reported by word of mouth by reliable MPS students and teachers to this reporter. I hold strictly confidential their names to protect their interest and positions held at various Milwaukee Public Schools.
Earlier this year Fox 6 News, reported violent incidents at two MP Schools, Hamilton and Bay View H.S http://fox6now.com/2012/02/07/hamilton-h-s-student-arrested-for-attacking-assist-principal/ HYPERLINK "http://fox6now.com/2012/02/07/hamilton-h-s-student-arrested-for-attacking-assist-principal/...%20Hamilton"Hamilton. The report also mentions incidents occurring at "James Madison High School and Washington High School," with recent incidents when the report aired February 7, 2012. At Hamilton H.S Fox 6 News reported, "The student allegedly attacked an assistant principal. Police say the student was arrested for felony battery to a teacher, and they say an officer was injured during this incident." In spite of local media outlets, such as the Journal Sentinel Newspaper reporting limited incidents that make it to the breakfast table while sipping on the morning Joe, many violent incidents go unreported to the general public.
One incident in particular disturbed me to the point of amazement it was not covered on the evening news, or in the next day’s newspaper. As a matter of fact, I did not hear of the incident until 10 days after it occurred. As reported to me by an anonymous student, "After Custer H.S. Home coming football game, a group of suspended students attacked the school’s principle. The principle sustained injuries and was hospitalized after the attack." Another anonymous person reported, "Two Madison H.S. teachers were attacked this school year by students in their perspective classrooms, or in the halls of the school. One was attacked by a suspended student who gained entry into the school with five other non-students that assisted in the attack that hospitalized the male teacher with severe injuries. Weeks later a senior female teacher was attacked by a student during class. The attacker was subdued by another teacher then police was called and arrested the student. She sustained chest and shoulder injuries which require ongoing therapy for a full recovery. Members of the Madison boys’ basketball team were robed at gun point in the parking lot after basketball practice one evening a few weeks after last mention attack." Violence at Madison H.S. this year is not uncommon. Madison did have an incident that made local news back in January of this year,
While researching incidents of school violence it appears it is not bias to the Milwaukee Public School system. It is a National problem that is increasing in most urban school districts across the Nation and world. The National School Safety Center states, "Some feel that school violence is not their problem because they are in denial that it occurs in their school district, school, or affects their own child in any way. The truth is that it affects everyone. It is the job of not only the teachers but of the parents and community in order for schools to be made safer" http://www.nssc1.org/school-violence-statistics.html.
I guess the reason I’m writing this report which many might say is based on hearsay or word of mouth, but it is word of mouth from individuals who feel at a loss and trapped in their classrooms with students acting out, not caring about learning and personal achievement for their future roles in our society. Teachers are literally afraid of some of their defiant students who call them out of their names daily, having no respect for authority, and most importantly respect for teacher’s roles, as a molder of young people personalities and potential as future mature adults, contributing to the positive development of our society and great Nation.
Finally, I believe the media has a responsibility to report incidents of violence at our public schools more regularly when violence occurs, so that parents and the general public can be well informed of the War on Violence in Public Schools.
